USA Today (3/7, Payne, 1.71M) reports, "The growing toll of diabetes cost the nation a record high $245 billion in 2012, a 41% increase from $174 billion in 2007, according to new research released" yesterday. The American Diabetes Association (ADA)-commissioned study, called "Economic Costs of Diabetes in the US in 2012," provided an estimate of "the health care and work-related costs of diagnosed diabetes." Results from the study will appear in print in the April issue of the journal Diabetes Care.

Research links 180,000 deaths annually to sugary drinks

The beverages raised deaths worldwide from diabetes by 133,000, from cardiovascular disease by 44,000 and from cancer by 6,000, according to the study." The researchers found that "Latin America had the most diabetes deaths related to sugary drinks.

Gene Therapy Spurs Leukemia Hope

Researchers reported fresh evidence Wednesday that using gene therapy to manipulate the immune system is emerging as a promising new strategy in the fight against cancer.

Five patients with a lethal leukemia achieved complete and rapid remissions after the treatment, in which cells from their own immune systems were genetically altered to specifically attack the disease.

While the study was small, researchers were impressed that the cancer was eradicated in all five patients. In one patient, all evidence of the cancer was gone eight days after treatment.
